Monday Mindful Moments: Smell The Flowers

Practicing mindfulness doesn’t have to be a huge, complicated thing.

This week, I’m back again for another edition of Monday Mindful Moments. This time, you’re going to pay attention to that wonderful sense of smell ya got.

Summer Time Mindfulness- Smell the Flowers

With summer just beginning, there are so many flowers in full bloom. When was the last time you actually took time to “smell the roses”? In our fast-paced life, we spend so much time going from one thing to the next, multi-tasking, and the stuff that’s happening right in front of us, at this very moment. We are literally missing life’s experiences. When you’re constantly thinking about whatever the next thing is on your “to-do” list, you’re missing out on life’s simple, pleasures.

Here’s your Monday Mindfulness Practice

This exercise gives you permission (if it makes you feel better) to stop going, going, going. For today, I want you to purposely stop and smell the roses (or whatever flower you want). Stop in at a local flower shop. Or, while you’re out at the grocery store, take a moment, (that’s all you need) and inhale the lovely smell of one of the bouquets of flowers that are on display.

No time to make a stop somewhere? Roll down the windows and breathe in the fresh air.

How can practicing this mindfulness exercise benefit you?

Why can “smelling the flowers” be a helpful mindfulness exercise

Being aware of our sense of smell, while breathing deeply is one way to be mindful of this moment. By purposely taking the time to recognize the beautiful simplicity of the “little things” in life, it helps to elicit feelings of gratitude, peace, and serenity. Not only that, but this little gem of an exercise in mindfulness can be very grounding.

The very act of paying attention to our breathing helps bring us back to the present moment.
