Top 2 Questions about Philadelphia Dialectical Behavior Therapy
1. What does DBT stand for exactly and what does it mean?
DBT stands for Dialectical Behavior Therapy. “Dialectical” means finding a balance of seemingly opposite views. In other words, it’s finding a synthesis of opposites.
It’s like being able to see how two seemingly opposing things can both be true at the same time. It’s NOT an “all or nothing” thing. The biggest example of this in DBT therapy is finding a balance between ACCEPTANCE AND CHANGE.
“Behavior” means that DBT is a “behavioral” approach. DBT therapists assess situations and identify target behaviors that are important to their client's goals. Targeting behaviors help DBT therapists and their clients solve the problems in clients’ lives.
It’s about helping my clients use more effective strategies for dealing with problems.
2. How does DBT work?
DBT is a treatment that is collaborative. This means that both the DBT therapist and client work together to help clients reach their goals. DBT has 4 modes of treatment which include individual psychotherapy, DBT Skills Training, in-between session/in-the-moment coaching calls, and DBT Consultation Team for DBT therapists.
DBT Skills Training involves learning skills to help you create a life worth living. It focuses on 4 modules of training, which include: core mindfulness skills, distress tolerance skills, interpersonal effectiveness skills, and emotion regulation skills.
When you work with me, as your DBT therapist, I provide individual therapy sessions AND individual DBT Skills Training sessions. I also am part of a DBT Consultation Team and offer coaching calls as well.
