DBT Philadelphia: 3 Facts You Need to Know

3 Truths about Dialectical Behavior Therapy in Philadelphia

When you’re looking for Borderline Personality Disorder treatment in Philadelphia, it can be really confusing. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has been shown to be effective in helping a variety of issues and is the treatment of choice for BPD. While DBT has become more well-known, there’s a bunch of misinformation out there as well.

As a Philadelphia DBT therapist, I thought it’s important to set the record straight and provide you with the truth about Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

Facts about DBT in Philadelphia

DBT Truth #1:

Not all therapists who say they use DBT, are DBT therapists.

In order to be a DBT therapist, there are certain criteria that a DBT therapist needs to meet. Outpatient DBT needs to provide the following 4 modes of treatment. These include weekly, individual psychotherapy; weekly skills training; as needed, in-the-moment coaching calls; and be a member of a DBT Consultation Team.

DBT Truth #2:

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is an intensive treatment, which requires commitment.

Once you and your DBT Therapist agree that DBT therapy is the right fit for you, the minimum time commitment is for six months. It is likely that the time you spend in DBT is less than the time you’ve spent feeling miserable and under emotional distress. It is also likely that you haven’t gotten to where you are overnight. Learning new skills to help you solve your problems and create a life worth living takes time.

DBT Truth #3:

DBT is often a person’s last-ditch effort to find a treatment that works.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy was developed for treating chronically suicidal individuals and those who suffer from Borderline Personality Disorder. People who relate to BPD and/or have been diagnosed with BPD often have gotten a bad rap. This can be attributed to so much misinformation out there on BPD and clinician’s lack of training and education on BPD, which contributes to the stigma surrounding BPD.

People often find DBT after several unsuccessful attempts at “typical” counseling or therapy. DBT is different and has been shown to be effective in Borderline Personality Disorder treatment.

I hope this helps you gain more clarity on DBT by knowing about the facts.
