Top 10 FAQ's about counseling & Therapy in Harrisburg
/FAQ’s About Counseling and Therapy in Harrisburg
When you’re searching for a therapist in Harrisburg, it can be overwhelming and confusing, to say the least.
As a licensed counselor in Harrisburg, I’ve provided you with answers to some of my most frequently asked questions. I hope these will be helpful for you.
10 Questions About Counseling in Harrisburg
1. Can therapy or you, really help me cope with (insert problem here)?
It depends. It depends on finding the best fit for your therapy journey. That means finding a therapist or counselor who is the best fit for your needs and what you’re going through.
In my Harrisburg private practice, I help adults who have intense emotions learn how to manage their anxiety. That may mean using DBT to treat Borderline Personality Disorder, helping people who are anxious or have experienced trauma.
2. How does counseling work?
Licensed therapists are extensively trained to help people care for their emotional and behavioral health. With that being said, therapists and counselors are not miracle workers who will magically “cure” you of your mental health needs.
The outcomes of treatment are tied greatly to how willing you are to invest in and engage in the therapeutic process. Psychotherapy is hard work for clients and it may feel really uncomfortable. Remembering and talking about unpleasant/difficult situations, and becoming aware of thoughts and feelings associated with those situations can be really hard. I will challenge you AND promise to support you the entire way.
Psychotherapy is work for both the therapist and client. I will use my expertise and knowledge to help guide and support you. I will challenge you to help you better understand yourself and patterns of thinking and behavior.
3. I’m not sure I need counseling. How do I know if this is for me?
Clients who call me have often been trying to manage their lives for quite a while. Whether or not clients have been in therapy in Harrisburg before, they come to a point when they realize that whatever is going on is interfering with their life and they’re ready to try something new.
One of the reasons I offer free, 15-minute, phone consultations, is to help you decide whether you feel I’ll be the best therapist to help you with your, specific, personal pain. With all of the therapists in Harrisburg, I think it’s so vital for you to feel a connection with me, your potential counselor, and to make sure it feels like a good therapeutic fit, otherwise, it won’t be successful.
4. How long will I need to be in therapy?
Due to the individualized nature of psychotherapy, time in therapy varies between clients. Therapy is such a personal thing and it takes time for you to develop and maintain positive, consistent change.
I know that when you pick up the phone to call me, you’re ready to feel better now. It’s been my experience that clients feel better sooner and make faster progress towards their goals when we meet for weekly sessions.
My clients who invest in weekly therapy sessions, meet their goals faster and are less likely to fall back into old behavior patterns.
5. When do you schedule your appointments and do you have any availability?
My clients are scheduled on a weekly basis. You will be scheduled for the same day and time each week to help with consistency and scheduling. I realize that you are already busy and have a lot on your plate- having the same day and time each week helps cut down on any confusion, plus, lessens the overwhelm of trying to accommodate schedules.
I see clients on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, with sessions scheduled at 8 am, 9 am, 10:15 am, and 11:30 am.
At present, I have limited availability; however, sessions due tend to book quickly.
6. Do you take insurance?
As a Harrisburg therapist, I am an “out of network” provider. That means that I do not contract with any specific insurance company. My clients pay me for each session and I provide documentation to submit to your insurance company for any “out of network” reimbursement you are entitled to. This means that you will have to speak with your particular insurance company to inquire about what your “out of network” benefit is.

8. What are your counseling specialties?
I specialize in:
anxious, stressed-out, college students and professionals
hard-working, highly-sensitive, creative minds
people who struggle with overwhelming, intense emotions and feelings
people who’ve experienced trauma
In other words, I specialize in using DBT to treat Borderline Personality Disorder, anxiety counseling, and therapy for trauma.
9. Do you think I’m crazy?
It makes perfect sense to me that you feel like you’re losing your mind. The fact is anyone who is overwhelmed by anxiety, dealing with BPD, or trying to deal with past trauma, is just trying to find relief from feeling like crap. Sometimes we all just need a little support to help us get through difficult stuff. On top of that, a lot of the things you are struggling with are most likely not unique to only you. In other words, you are not alone in your emotional pain.
