Mindfulness: What's the point?

What’s the Point of Mindfulness?

With all of the chaos related to the Coronavirus, it’s hard to sometimes understand the importance of “returning to the now”, which is exactly what mindfulness means. About a week ago, I wrote about what mindfulness actually is. If you missed that entry, you can read about it here. You may be wondering, “How is that even possible? I have to plan for the impending future. I have too much to worry about, to even begin to think about what’s going on right now!

Coronavirus Chaos

I mean, I get it. I understand the importance of making plans on how to manage the uncertain future—worries about keeping your loved ones safe; frustration with business and schools being closed; fear of the unknown.

So, how can I even suggest that you allow yourself to pay attention to the present; to purposely pay attention to this very moment?

The Benefits of Mindfulness

The practice of mindfulness has been shown to be an effective and beneficial way to cope with anxiety & stress, is associated with increased self-esteem and life satisfaction to name a few.

When you are reliving past, painful events or trauma; or overwhelmed with worries of the future, you are not paying attention to what’s going on now, as in right now. Being able to return to the present moment, is a simple concept, yet challenging to do.

In my counseling private practice, I help people who want relief from their anxiety. I regularly incorporate mindfulness-based practices into each session.

It’s just that important-It simply works.
