These are some of the words my clients use to describe their personal experience with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).  If you missed my prior post describing the main characteristics of BPD, you can read more about it here.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), an evidence-based approach, developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., is a form of cognitive-behavioral treatment, which incorporates individual psychotherapy and group skills training classes. Learning and developing new skills, in addition to, individual counseling, help you create a life worth living.

DBT emphasizes skills for mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance.

Skills training aims to enhance your capability to handle "life's moments" by learning and implementing specific behavioral skills. There are four parts to skills training.

1. Mindfulness:

This is the practice of being fully "present" and in the moment.

2. Interpersonal Effectiveness:

This focuses on how to ask for what you need/want, in addition to, being able to say no, while maintaining healthy relationships and self-respect.

3. Emotion Regulation:

This helps you learn how to change the emotions you want to change.

4. Distress Tolerance:

This focuses on learning how to tolerate emotional pain.
